WLJ: Activity Nineteen

For this Winter Learning Journey, I went outside on a clear night and I first opened up the app that I downloaded which is SkyView. SkyView will help you find a real constellation! Here are some photos that I captured at night! The two star constellation that caught my eyes were Taurus and Scorpion because of how they shaped like!

The constellation Scorpius, often called the Scorpion, is a distinctive and easily recognizable pattern of stars in the southern sky. It is one of the zodiac constellations and is known for its resemblance to a scorpion, complete with claws and a curled tail. Scorpius is also known for its bright stars

Taurus is a star constellation in the night sky, easily recognizable by its V-shaped pattern of stars that forms the bull’s head and horns. It’s a zodiac constellation, meaning the sun appears to pass through it as part of its yearly journey across the sky.

I found this activity enjoyable because I got the opportunity to find out more about each and every STAR constellation in the WORLD!

WLJ: Activity Eighteen

Acitivty Eighteen: Winter Energy Audit, Audit your home’s energy use. Find ways to reduce power bills in winter. Start your blog post with “How my family can save power (and the planet) this winter”.

For this Winter Learning Journey, I created a DLO explaining what I could do to reduce power bills in winter.

To save power for winter, I think kids and parents should have 1 electronic per person so that way it can reduce power bills. Having more than 3 electronics in the house can increase bills if used at the same time! One other way to decrease bills is that you can make an activity or a project  for your family.

WLJ: Activity Three

Activity Three: What do you think it would be like to live in a igloo? What would you hear, feel and smell? Create a DLO explaining what you think that you could smell, hear and feel in an igloo!

For this Winter Learning Journey, I created a DLO explaining what I would smell, hear and feel in an igloo. I started first by using wordhippo for more powerful and understanding words that could help me write this out. This is what I wrote so far! I could feel the icy tendril slipping down my spine, igniting a shiver that coursed through my entire being, as if the very air around me had turned frigid and alive.

I can smell a subtle aroma of ice and snow, a crisp reminder of winter’s magic that stirred my senses and beckoned me into its chilly embrace.

I can hear a variety of subtle sounds that contribute to its unique atmosphere. The soft crunch of snow outside as the wind blows, the gentle drip of melting ice. There’s the faint rustle of tree branches swaying in the breeze, creating a delicate symphony with each gust.

WLJ: Activity Seven

Activity Seven: On a cold winter’s day, it is great to curl up on a couch with your favourite movie. After you have watched your favourite movie, have a go on creating your own movie review. Prepare your script first, and then create a screen cast or video of your review.

For this Winter Learning Journey, I had to watch my favourite movie and creat a movie review based on my favourite movie. One of my favourite movies is “Frozen”. Frozen is a Disney animated film that tells the story of two royal sisters, Elsa and Anna, in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle. Elsa, the older sister, possesses magical powers that allow her to manipulate ice and snow. After accidentally revealing her abilities during her coronation, she isolates herself in an ice palace, plunging Arendelle into eternal winter.

I enjoyed this activity because I created a movie review based on one of my favourite movies.

WLJ: Activity Fourteen

Activity Fourteen: Comment on 3 other student’s blogs. Make sure you leave a greeting, a positive, a thoughtful, a helpful comment, and a question. That means 5 sentences! If you get a comment, make sure to reply!

For this Winter Learning Journey activity, I had to comment on 3 other student’s blogs. I had to make sure that I included a greeting, a positive, thoughtful, helpful comment, and a question in the blog. I used a greeting in all of the comments, and a positive sentence. But I didn’t write a helpful comment to all of them because they were amazing and didn’t need any changes.

WLJ: Activity Twelve

Activity Twelve: Create 4 math problems using things you see in the winter. Think about using fractions, multiplication, addition, and subtraction. Can you make a problem for each?

For this Winter Learning Journey, I had to create 4 math equations using things I see during Winter. But I have to include one of the following in each equation, addition, fractions, subtraction, and multiplication. To do this activity, I thought about what I would see during the winter. The first thing that popped into my head was snowballs because in some countries during winter it often snows and kids can make snowballs with the snow. Another thing I added into one of the equations was the temperature because the temperature changes quite often during the winter.

WLJ: Activity Eight – Song Maker

Activity Eight: Using Song Maker, create some music that reminds you of Winter.

For this Winter Learning Journey activity, I had to create a song, that reminds me of the Winter. Using a song maker, Chrome Music Lab. I was inspired by a song that can be heard in Minecraft, “Wet Hands”. It is made by Daniel Rosenfeld, a german musician, also known as C418. Wet Hands reminds me of winter because of its soft and calming sounds, just like the cold winter breeze. To be able to create a song inspired by “Wet Hands” I played Wet Hands on Chrome music Lab. I then used that same piece, and I added and removed notes to make it sound different but still similar. I added drums to keep the song in beat and used piano. I enjoyed this activity because I learnt how to make music on chrome music lab, and I had to use my creativity and imagination to create the song.

WLJ: Activity Nine

For the Winter Learning Journey, Amorangi and I created an infographic about Kiribati and shared our information about the island.

We shared facts and ideas of the information we found about Kiribati. Did you know that Kiribati is located in the central pacific ocean and the lagoons are home to various Marines life including reefs, sharks and rays. This island is well known as the country that saw the sunrise first and the island is scattered everywhere in the vast area and has islands in all 4 hemispheres. I had to translate phrases, colours, and shapes into the Kiribati language. For example “Hello” in Kiribati is “Mauri”. “What are you doing?”, in Kiribati is “Terana ae ko karaoia?”. The colour red in Kiribati is uraura, green is kiriin, orange is Aoranti, and yellow is baabobo. Did you know that sometimes, in the Kiribati language, the letter “t” can be pronounced as the letter “s”, because their alphabet doesn’t have the letter “s”?

Kiribati is an island located in the the Pacific Ocean with a population of 135,763 people. Their national colour is red, yellow and blue. Which can be seen on their flag, along with their nation bird, the frigate bird. The yellow frigate bird on their flag, represents freedom and dance patterns. The blue and white wavy stripes symbolize the Pacific ocean that surrounds Kiribati. Lastly, the sun represents Kiribati’s position above the equator. I enjoyed this activity because I learnt how to say a few phrases and words in Kiribati.

WLJ: Activity Eleven

WLJ: Activity Eleven: Given the word ‘snowstorm’, kindly list as many words as possible using the letters contained in the word. For the Winter Learning Journey, I undertook the task of finding as many words as possible from the word “Snowstorm”. I started with the word itself, Snowstorm, and then broke it down into its components, snow and storm. I continued this process until I couldn’t think of any more words, and in total, I managed to find 45 words.

WLJ: Activity Seventeen

Activity Seventeen: Research an NZ athlete who is competing at the Olympic Games. Share your learning about their statistics and Journey to competing.

For this Winter Learning Journey activity, I recently conducted some research on a New Zealand athlete who will be participating in the upcoming Olympics in Paris, France. After careful consideration, I chose to focus on Aaron Gate due to his impressive track record as an Olympic bronze medalist and a six-time Commonwealth Games medalist.

Born on November 26, 1990, Aaron Gate is a prominent New Zealand road and track cyclist currently affiliated with UCI ProTeam Burgos BH. Standing at a height of 181cm, he surpasses my height! Notably, Aaron Gate secured an Olympic bronze medal in Team Pursuit at the London 2012 Olympic Games and has accumulated a total of 7 medals, including 4 gold and 3 bronze. With an impressive track record, Gate has been a consistent performer in the cycling world, demonstrating his skill and determination in numerous competitions. His achievements have solidified his reputation as one of New Zealand’s top cyclists, inspiring others through his dedication to the sport. Gate’s passion for cycling and his outstanding accomplishments serve as a testament to his talent and unwavering commitment to excellence in the competitive cycling arena.

This research endeavor proved to be an enlightening experience as I delved into the achievements of New Zealand’s most accomplished Olympian.
