Writing

In writing we have been learning about complex sentences.  A complex sentence are two simple sentences put together with a fanboy. A complex sentence is an independent clause (a sentence that can stand on its own) with 1 or more dependent clauses added (dependant clauses can’t stand on their own as a sentence).  An independent clause is a group of words that can stand alone as a sentence.  It has both a subject and a verb and forms a complete thought.  An independent clause is the combination of at least one subject and predicate. It expresses a complete thought. For example: The waves crashed onto the sandy shore. A dependent clause has a subject and verb, is introduced by a subordinate conjunction or a relative pronoun, but does not express a complete thought. A dependent clause is not a complete sentence. An example of a complex sentence: Because the heavy rains flooded the entrance to the door is blocked.

We first had to pracice identifying independant and dependant clauses in a complex sentences.  Then we had to write our own complex sentences and say which clauses were independent, and which were dependant.  Then we made a DLO that explains what we learnt about complex sentences and the different clauses.
